The Netherlands is more affordable than other Northern Europe countries, despite being comparable for quality and standards. The greatest expense is housing, which can be high due to a demand/supply imbalance. It can be significantly cheaper to live outside of the major cities but consider increased transport costs. The tax system is complicated. Taxes are high, but there are many ways of reclaiming costs. One look at the public services and infrastructure and you can see that your money is being well spent. Health insurance is also quite expensive, but it is one of the most efficient and egalitarian services in the world. Salaries are generally high to offset these costs and the average disposable income is large. Food is cheap and great quality. You could save euros by buying a bicycle. This is essential in the Netherlands and riding your bike to work can save money, time and burn extra calories!
